What do YOU expect?

So I don't know if I'm the only one, but this is my first multi-day continuous road ride. Sure, I've done a few centuries and a few multi-day mountain bike rides based at one camp, but never have I ridden til I fell over, then gotten back up to do it again, and again.

I'm interested in hearing from everyone what they expect going in to this? Here are some baiting questions to get your mind brewing...

Do you have a mileage strategy? An eating strategy?
What do you think YOUR difficulties will be?
What are you going to do to pass the time-- listen to music, write mental poetry, hassle fellow riders?
Pedaling--are you a masher or a spinner, and how will this help or hurt you?
Most of all, what are you most looking forward to?

Either post here yourself, or comment in the comment box. Be sure to leave your name!
I'm super excited everyone! Can't wait til the launch date!

Carol's attack:
150 miles the first day
130 miles the second day
80 miles the last day.

Staying hydrated, eating enough and getting up some of the hills are going to be the three most challenging parts.
It is nice that the route we are taking is well marked, so that even in a state of delirium we will be able to navigate.
Music is going to be nice, I have a light weight music device that will come in handy when the going gets tough. As they say" When the going gets tough the tough gets going."
The more continous gradual pace that you can set for yourself, the better. Just finding your grove and flowing with it. Keeping your smile at your fingertips the whole time.
There is only 20 days until we leave. WOW!

Do you have a mileage strategy?

-I hope for 175-200 miles in the first 24 hours, sleep a bit, then push to the finish with maybe a 20 minute nap or 2 in there.

An eating strategy?

-Protein may be an hassle, as I don't eat the meat. I plan on carrying a few bars and packets of electrolyte stuff, but most of the foos intake will probably be of the gas station variety. Trail mix, chocolate milk, peanut m&ms work for me

What do you think YOUR difficulties will be?

-Weather and wind could be huge difficulties, but staying on the bike and talking short breaks may be a problem for me. Carol and I did about 100 miles in about 7 hours ride time last Sunday, but we were out for 9 hours total. Some of this was my fault, as my bladders seems to have shrunk to the size of my 2 year old kid's.

What are you going to do to pass the time-- listen to music, write mental poetry, hassle fellow riders?

-I hope to borrow a music making device, sing songs to myself, and think about what kind of house I'll build when I win the lottery. Earth bag vs straw bale, vs adobe vs stick built vs log vs yurt, etc..

Pedaling--are you a masher or a spinner, and how will this help or hurt you?

-I have found my pedaling style can adapt to my situation. I do find the some spinning and some mashing helps to work different muscles of the course of a long ride.

Most of all, what are you most looking forward to?

-I'm looking forward to the whole package: the camaraderie, the solitude, exploration, the start, the finish, watching the sunrise after riding all night, testing my limits, the finish.

Howdy everyone,

I've done a couple of mulit-day bike tours before but nothing to this extent . I plan to stealth camp along the way so hopefully the weather agrees.

My mileage idea is pretty much the same as Carols. 2 long days and then an easy one up the rail trail.

Difficulties will be pushing 42x17 over the hills with camping gear and then spinning out the descents. Also food may be tricky. I doubt I'll find too may vegan friendly restaurants so I'll be heading to grocery store to stock up.

Music : No iwhatever for me. Just the wind and whatever tripe I spew about freewheels, derailluers, and 'W'. (We'll probably see a lot of 'W04' stickers out on the road)

Mash...spin... I'll take a little of both. Biggest problem is not being able to stretch out as easy while your peddling the whole time.

Overall I think this trip will be a blast. Meeting other glutton-for-punishment bikers while crossing the state sounds like a good time to me.

How much of a race does everyone see this as? I'm thinking more of a fast tour with a burned out, foul smelling, no strength left sprint at the finish to please the cheering crowds! Just my thoughts though.

Alright now questions:

Pittsburgh locals: any camping/hotel suggestions for Sunday night. I plan on renting a car to drive home (Reading) on Monday and need a place to stay.

Eastern PA folks: how you getting home? Amtrack says they don't take luggage (bikes) from Pitt to Phil. Need to box your bike up for a bus (no box). I'm thinkng rent a car. About $70 one way to Philly. Any takers? I plan on driving down to Philly from Reading the morning of the start and dropping off rental downtown. Any other suggestions?

Less than 3 weeks now...
Chris
