Dates

Hey everyone. I am thinking that the dates can move back a bit.

Lets push it to the weekend of the 18th, that is a Friday. Start at 5am and go from pittsburgh to philly.

We are also thinking about doing it during bike fest. That would be a bit later in the season, warmer weather. The dates for that are still undertermined. We will keep you updated.

Hi,

I'm tentatively planning a tour from Washington to Pittsburgh, via the C&O towpath and the ATA trail...then to Philadelphia, and back down to DC (probably through Baltimore too)...anyways i just stumbled on this race and was wondering what Route S is like (is there any signage along the way?), and/or do you guys know of any cuesheets that can take me from downtown PGH to downtown Philly?

Thanks,
-Ben

Ben,
Route is very well marked. Very easy to follow.

I do not know of any cue sheets, but here are links to maps that should get you there.

The Pittsburgh to Mckeesport leg is UGLY. 4 lanes of traffic moving at almost freeway speeds with little to no shoulder for a few miles. I've been working on an alternate route on the other side of the river but haven't finalized anything.

hey ben, sounds like an awesome loop!

on the philly side route S intersects with the schuylkill river trail. as seen here: http://www.bicyclecoalition.org/map/map_html/nav_b4.html . the down side of that trail is that there is no obvious way to get from manyuck to center city, because the trail doesn't exist there.

i was thinking that an alternate route into center city might be to take route S until route 23. then take 23 south into the city. but i don't know what that road is like.

i don't reccommend taking route 1 from philly to dc -it really sucks! its OK from philly to baltimore, this website has a bike route from baltimore to dc: http://bikewashington.org/routes/dc2balt/index.htm. i haven't ridden their route, but i have ridden route 1 and anything is better than that.

Thanks for the responses and info,

i'll keep checking back to seewhat you come up with for Pittsburgh to McKeesport...i think i'll have to study maps of both cities...as for the Baltimore to DC route, i've taken the bikewashington route a couple times and it's fine (it actually goes to greenbelt), but i'll look at US1 and possible alternatives to get down to baltimore...

this tour is still a while off, sometime this summer, probably after your event, but maybe (if i can overcome procastination) i'll schedule it to coincide and ride with you guys for part of a day or something (tho i'd probably be taking it a fair bit slower)

Carol,

When is Bike Fest this year?

If you push back the date to after June 10th, I would love to ride. I need something crazy to do this summer and Dan W. may be headed out of town. I just can't get time off of work before the 10th.

Thanks,
dave- fixed gear punkbiker.

May 18th would be perfectly awesome with me.

I've got a Route S map that's hand-annotated to clear up all the confusing parts of the route with poor signage. I might make some nice clean printed versions with instructions on getting to the tunnel and distribute them for the race.

Pittsburgh to McKeesport is truely an abyssmal ride, but at 5 AM I don't think it would be so bad.

Bikefest is June 29th through Juky 8th. The big Party is the first weekend, so the race wold probably start Friday July 6th.
