May 18th

May 18th seems to make the most sense to me, as I would like to be in Pittsburgh for bike-fest.

All in favor?

Also, Point State Park(last years finish) is closed for the summer. The Mt. Washington overlook seems like a great starting point to me.

Neutral Roll to Mckeesport gets my vote and many others, so it shall be.

As of today March 31 this is what I see:

Start
May 18th Friday
5:00 am
Mount Washington Overlook (I'll post map later for out-of-towners)
Neutral roll to Mckeesport.

Finish
Liberty Bell, although Max recommended the Art Museum as easier to find

After Party?

Anyone have any ideas?

Hey. That sounds good to me. I will see you there. Maybe we could have the after party at lockwoods house? I will ask him. If not....maybe a late date for after parting in pittsburgh?

Thanks!

Just curious...

How long will it take most of you to complete this trip? I am interested in a multi-day bike ride soon, but it took me and a friend 4 days or so to make it to DC along the allegheny passage / C&O Canal carrying about 30lbs each of camping gear.

How do people plan to get back to Pittsburgh after the race?

You can email me at pghmtnbike@yahoo.com or I'll just check these threads from time to time...

Thanks!

Last year we started Friday 5am and the official winner finished Sunday morning. He road through a good bit of the night though.

Me and the three other finishers got in around 6pm Sunday. 3 full days with riding until around 11pm or so the first 2 days.

I'd like to try for 2 days, basically coming in late Saturday night, early Sunday morning.

Weather could easily change that, we got lucky last year with the wind shifting and coming from the NE. But going west to east we should still have a tailwind.

we could easily find a bar in in the city or manayunk to get us all drunk as well.

but if we had a more mellow spot where we could all relax, chip in on some brews, and sit and talk about this crazy ride that might be nicer.

i wish i could volunteer my place but it is small and out of the way.

i am also REALLY curious tooo see how many people we get this year and if we will have more of a race or tour vibe to this years crushing... i think i might want to race but then it will really all depend on what happens out there.

anyone have any good ideas for places out of towners could crash the night before the start? i will obviously have some camping gear so really all i need is a spot of ground where the man won't hassle me as i get my beauty sleep.

i am getting excited. i really haven't trained too hard, but compared to last year i KNOW i am in better shape going in.

Max,

I like your idea about a place to chill and rehash the ride, Lockwood's house would be great, although it is a bit outside of Philly, which could make it a bit harder to get to for some folks.

I think a post race Pgh gather would be cool also.

I plan to take a mini-vacation after the race, so my wife and kids will probably come get me in Philly. Others are talking about the train, or bus, but that may means UPSing your bike.

I hear that Nick is train hard for this ride..really honing his dumpster diving skills ;~)
